Hanging on The Air Current
I was told the puffin had all gone away from Iceland last month. his made me suspicious. Puffin like whale are on the menu in Iceland. Then again in a country that gets so icy cold . Why not eat these friendly little guys. Iceland still holds many mysteries, and a few can be found on something as simple as a menu out in the boon docks and fog.
After being told they are all gone I started to believe them. I have a six sense when it comes to photography.
WHile in Vik an couple of seniors that looked like penguins waddled out and then back into their car. I was determine to shoot them and did. AT my hotel during breakfast I noticed that they had booked the same Hotel 12 kilometers outside of Vik.. We talked and mentioned he saw puffins. And cautioned that it wasn't thousands , but hundreds. Come on Thousands of Puffins, two Puffins or hundreds are just fine. He game me a location but proudle show me his puffins from his tiny point and shoot. I was impressed. He had wonderful sunny IMages. ON my day the gods wanted to challenge me. I had to drive in the wind and fog to a butte that jetted out to a black beach. I dawned the rain pants, poncho, wind breaker and thermal undershirt. abd rain boots and plenty of plastic around the camera. I figured if the gods where going to mess with me I'd at least have man's best plastic in my favor. The long and short of it, the gods ripped the plastic away and and sent it sailing in the light gale. So I stood there dripping wet eye piece fogged up from my body heat and fired away at hundred of Puffin. Something I have never done before. Here you can see the rain. By the time I got back to the car a change of underwear was called for, but not until I walked in the the cafe in Vik and squished in a seat drinking hot coffee and a tuna salad.
The people in the town I was a mess, but I felt like a hard core photographer A shot of scothch followed and I shivered home out of sight of the towns people and allowed the hot shower to return my body core temperature from cold to normal. I will always think back on Iceland after I have gone on how strange and wonderful this place is. It is my Gulliver's Travels.
