Trashigang Dzong in eastern Bhutan

The dzong stands at the extreme end of the spur, overhanging the Gamri River by more than 400 metres. Unlike most other dzongs, it has only one courtyard. It serves as the administrative seat for the district. The dzong was built in 1659 after Eastern Bhutan had finally been conquered by the Drukpas. The fortress was named Trashigang, the 'fortress of the auspicious mountain'.
We had the chance tfor a visit inside the dzong but as usual no photograph captures were allowed to taken inside the monastery.

(The foto captured in April 2000 during my third tour in Bhutan the transnational highway from Paro in the west to Sandrup Jongkhar in eastern Bhutan the borderline to Asaam in India. Scanned with NIKON CoolScan V ED.)
