You looked in on my work and posted a comment and would like to say thanks. I had a look at the work you have posted and if you are just kicking off then I'd say you have no worries.
The best advice I was ever given was: 'never press the shutter unless you know why you are doing it'. It is easy in this digital age to go click happy and end up with a lot of disappointment. With film 10% of an image is the photographer and 90% the printer. With digital you can control your work from concept to published work.. go digital. Discover the joys of working in a photo editing suite and put as much into it as you want out of it. Carry a camera, however small, ALL THE TIME.. everywhere.. decide you are a photographer and never be inhibited about pointing and using it. You will get a lot of different responses but you will meet some very interesting people. If you already work with people then you already have the skills to respond to them and find something in them worth documenting.. use those skills and transer them to photography. Take a course if you can.. gives you a good foundations.
Look at the work of other people and remember... if someone else can do it.. so can you.
I've prattled too long.. take care and thanks for the comment.. much appreciated.
nice to see you. sometimes the fotocommunity is a little bit crazy, but i think you'll have much fun and can learn all the things you want to learn about photography.

Hi Glo, Welcome to FC. Go on, put one or two of your shots on here for us to have a look at. I've only had my compact for a few months and already I am understanding that the composition of the photo is a huge part and the more you actually get out there and capture things and use your camera, you will begin to understand what both you and it are capable of. You sound like you've got a pretty good idea if you've had a couple of competition results. Hey, and don't be hard on your own images....we can do that for you ;-)))..No seriously, I've found the people on here to be very helpful and pretty quick to praise most results. I'll watch out for your work...Be cool...and have a great Christmas....Cheers..Rob (NZ)..What lovely nails you have..:-)
