Und den hatte der damals von Viehzucht lebende Staat im neunzehnten Jahrhundert durch einen Landtausch von Ceará erworben. 251.529 km 2 (was ziemlich genau der Flaeche der alten Bundesrepublik Deutschland entspricht) bei nur 3 Millionen Einwohnern, von denen 800.000 in der Hauptstadt Teresina leben. Die Vegetation ist eine Mischung zwischen der innerbrasilianischen Busch- und Baumsavanne ("Cerrado") und dem trockenen, mageren Buschland ("Caatinga") weiter oestlich.
