A Once Upon a Time Jewel on the Potomac
Of course, we knew it was only temporary, that restoration scaffolding that went up around the Washington
Monument, beginning in 1996, and remained until the extensive renovation saw completion in 2000.
From up close, it was obviously just that: an elaborate framework of metal scaffolding and lots of protective plastic...
But how it transformed the tall, stark obelisk on the National Mall, especially after dark, turning it into a multifaceted glowing jewel.
It inspired many a new look with the cameras, from many different
vantage points, from sunset through twilight to full night-time.
Indeed, on a clear night, it was nothing short of stunning...and magical!
The photograph was made in July 1999 on Fujicolor NPS film in a Canon EOS-1, using a 75-300 millimeter lens.
