Crazy quilt...Lipan Point GCNP
My eye sees rock layers tilted in all different directions, a kaleidoscope of colors, contrasts in shapes and textures, barren wastes and life-giving water. Some of my favorite views of the Grand Canyon are from this location, Lipan Point. It's the next observation point west of Desert View along the East Rim Drive of the south rim.

archiek, I absolutely agree about the picture needing more sky. There was more in the original (but just a little), but the horizon was tilted. I had to choose between leveling the shot and losing the sky when I cropped, or keeping the sky and giving people a queezy feeling from a tilted horizon. Yes, a wider angle would have helped. As I recall, there was an incredible wind blowing, and I was too lazy to go back to the car for it, then back out to the point. Ah, the joys and trials of travel photography. Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment, though. I hope you do get back to the Grand Canyon!archiek 17/06/2008 16:53
Wonderful vantage point. If I have some sky in my photos I try to leave it in across the whole horizon, not that it is necessary, but the far rim looks cut off. I know you were balancing the near ridge with the top of the far rim a good tradeoff in this shot unless you could get the wider angle. I have not been to GC for a long time. Makes me want to go again. -archieRyszard Basta 17/06/2008 16:43
