Drilling to pump for water

The extraction of water has always been a big problem in the south of Iran. Underground qanats (underground watercourses) flow about fifty meters below the earth's surface and the water has to be pumped up at great expense. The pumps run on electricity and the power is generated by petroleum-powered generators.
