Kumbum Stupa in Gyantse

First point of a visit in Gyantse is the Kumbum Stupa in the complex of the Palcho Monastery. Kumbum is a Tibetan word and the meaning is "One hundred thousand holy images". The second level was the most interesting one, but many of the images were damaged during the Cultural Revolution but have since been replaced with clay images, though they lack the artistic merit of the originals.
Nevertheless Gyantse is just 255 km from Lhasa and is one of the most pleasant towns in Tibet which retains the beauty of a traditional Tibetan culture untouched by modern expansion.

My picture is taken in May 2004 with a NIKON CoolPix 5000.
