The Living Forest (212) : Spindle
This is the colourful fruit of the Spindle, a deciduous shrub or small tree that is native to much of Europe and is mostly growing at the edges of the forest where there is sufficient light.
When the capsular fruit is ripe in autumn, four lobes split open to reveal the bright orange seeds.
The fruit that resembles a "cardinal's hat" is poisonous.
Dutch name : Wilde Kardinaalsmuts
German name : Pfaffenhütchen (auch Spindelstrauch genannt)
Latin name : Euonymus europaeus
