Tilapia fish en mass
Tilapia were originally farmed in their native Africa and Levant. Fast-growing, tolerant of stocking density, and adaptable, tilapia have been introduced to and are farmed extensively in many parts of Asia and are increasingly common aquaculture targets elsewhere like here at the fish farm near Chonburi in Thailand.
The fish are omnivores and can feed on food with low protein content. In conventional breeding facilities, the feed consists of a mixture of leftover products and fish that are specifically caught as feed fish.
When breeding in ponds and open net enclosures. In aquaponic systems, fish are bred in combination with crops. The waste products from fish farming are used directly as plant nutrients.
