Along the Old Main - No.7 - Bloody Marys and Bold Black Machines
This would certainly appear to be a mashup of themes – and hopefully not an endorsement by the photog
of drinking and then operating motorcycles – or steam locomotives! But it makes me smile, so I’ll share it.
The location is the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, Maryland, which sits along the Old Main Line of the
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, now operated by the CSX. That proximity to the historic “Old Main,” built by
the oldest railroad in the United States through the craggy Patapsco Valley, accounts for the steam locomotive
that seems to be bursting out of the front of the place, the “chef” seemingly approving of the chaos.
As can be seen from the scattered leaves, the photo was taken on an afternoon
in late autumn, between photographing heavy CSX freights along the Old Main.
“Along the Old Main” is a collection of photos taken at various points along the
route, mostly of trains, but also including trackside scenes such as this one.
