Along the Potomac No.1 - Beneath the Railroad Bridge, Harpers Ferry
The Potomac River can be a maelstrom of treacherous rapids, crashing through its rocky gorge at Great Falls between Maryland and Virginia, (*) or broad and flowing as it passes the monuments and memorials of Washington and continues between Maryland and Virginia on its way to the Chesapeake Bay. But, upstream, one finds lovely, tranquil spots as well.
This is one of them, at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, before the Potomac's confluence with the Shenandoah River.(**) This peaceful spot, bathed in the contra-light of a late afternoon in summer is just below one of the railroad bridges that carry CSX freight traffic, Amtrak's Capitol Limited, and MARC commuter trains between Harpers Ferry and Maryland.
