And the year was 1693 ...

Everything has changed since then but the basic plot is still the same. Still birth, death, love, hate, happiness, dispair, wealth and poverty.

And just imagine what the first owner of this clock must have thought about how far society hde progressed compared to 1393.

    It caught my attention that the clock you so exquisitely portray here was made just a few short years before Dryden wrote, in his 1700 'Secular Masque', the cynical words for ringing in a new year:

    All, all of a piece throughout;
    Thy chase had a beast in view;
    Thy wars brought nothing about;
    Thy lovers were all untrue.
    'Tis well an old age is out,
    And time to begin a new.

    Over time the superficialities change, but the essentials do not. We think we begin again each year, but we do not. An excellent image for a profound message.
