Das Haupttransportmittel in den Backwaters ist natürlich das Boot. Vor 1900 war die Gegend recht unzugänglich. Der Bevölkerungsdruck führte dazu, dass man Gebiete eingedeicht und mit fruchtbarer Erde aufgefüllt hat. Dabei entstanden automatisch die heute so wichtigen Kanäle für den Transport.

The most important transportation in the Backwaters is of course the boat. Before 1900 the region was quite inaccessible. With the increasing population they started to build dykes and to fill up the swamp with fertile earth. The places where they have removed the earth changed into channels which are so important nowadays for the transport of people and goods.
