Bridge Beams and a Red Balloon - a New York Moment
Perhaps, like its namesake in the 1956 French film “Le Ballon Rouge,” for a time it
delighted a little boy in Williamsburg before deciding it preferred to soar heavenward…
Or maybe it was the symbol of lost childhood and the love
that would prove tenuous (“Will he hold the string or let it go?”)
in the bittersweet song Gordon Jenkins wrote for Judy Garland…
As it glided upon a gentle breeze, high above New York’s Williamsburg Bridge on this
inviting June afternoon, it evoked both scenarios, as well as setting the needle down
on Judy’s recording in the ever-present and ever ready to play “Gray Matter Gramophone"
situated somewhere behind the eyes and between the ears of a visiting photographer.
