Byzantine art

Greece
Thessaloniki
Church of St Nicholas Orphanos.
Thessaloniki was the second most important city of the immense Byzantine empire after the glorious capital Constantinople(now Istanbul). The most remarkable evidence of this Byzantine tradition are the many old churches loaded with frescoes and mosaics. One of these is St Nicholas Orrphanos with nearly all it's walls covered with wonderful frescoes from 14th century, restored and put under Unesco's protection.

a true gem, this ancient byzantine church! it has an amazing feel of intimacy about it! the gold of the frescoes – radiant and warm, belief-inspiring rather than awe-inspiring… an ambience that makes me get an inkling of what may be meant by the term "humanity of christ"… beautifully captured, alexander! greetings, sabine.

In recent days, Rob, with a decent camera, strong wide angle lens and ..ISO more than 1000, you can really do wonders even in hand held shot...
    thank you for the comments.
