  Thankyou. "To take coals to newcastle" means to do something that is pointless - like selling ice to eskimos. Interestingly - since the closure of all deep collieries in Britain - there is a significant amount of coal imported to newcastle (and conveyed onwards by train to power stations) -
  mainly from South Africa, i think. mark.
