Das Schalkenmehrener Maar ist ein sogenanntes Doppelmaar, d.h. es besteht aus zwei Teilen: aus dem westlichen Maarsee und dem östlichen Trockenmaar. Beide entstanden vor rund 10.500 Jahren durch eine vulkanische Gasexplosion. Die Wassertiefe beträgt max. 21 Meter.
