Am 02. September 2015 wurde an der türkischen Mittelmeerküste bei Bodrum die Leiche des 3-jährigen Aylan Kurdi angespült. Das Bild des toten syrischen Flüchtlingskind am Strand des türkischen Badeortes ging um die Welt und erregte weltweites Aufsehen, beschämte die Welt für einen Moment. Das Bild zeigt das tote Kind, bekleidet mit rotem T-Shirt und blauer kurzer Hose, die Schuhe noch an den Füßen, auf dem Bauch liegend im nassen Sand. Der kleine Aylan war mit seinem Bruder Galip (5), seiner Mutter Rehan und seinem Vater Abdullah vom Krieg in Syrien geflohen und versuchte von der Türkei aus über das Mittelmeer auf die griechische Insel Kos zu kommen. Wenige Kilometer sind es nur von der türkischen Küste bis zur griechischen Insel Kos. Aber die See ist in dieser Nacht rau, das Boot der Kurdis kentert. Abdullah Kurdi kann sich an dem Boot festhalten. Seiner Frau und den beiden Söhnen jedoch gelingt das nicht.

Das Bild von Aylan Kurdi besitzt eine tieftraurige Ästhetik. Es zeigt aber auch die Komplexität und Vielfältigkeit der Flüchtlingskrise in einem Moment der symbolträchtigen Widerspiegelung: Europas größte humanitäre Tragödie seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Aylan Kurdi hat in seinem kurzen Leben nur Krieg und Flucht kennengelernt.

On September 2nd, 2015, the body of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi was washed up on the Turkish Mediterranean coast near Bodrum. The picture of the dead Syrian refugee child on the beach of the Turkish seaside resort went around the world and caused a worldwide sensation, shaming the world for a moment. The picture shows the dead child, wearing a red T-shirt and blue shorts, the shoes still on his feet, lying on his stomach in the wet sand. Little Aylan had fled the war in Syria with his brother Galip (5), his mother Rehan and his father Abdullah and tried to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Turkey to the Greek island of Kos. It is only a few kilometers from the Turkish coast to the Greek island of Kos. But the sea was rough that night and the Kurdish boat capsized. Abdullah Kurdi can hold on to the boat. However, his wife and two sons do not succeed.

Aylan Kurdi's image has a deeply sad aesthetic. But it also shows the complexity and diversity of the refugee crisis in a moment of symbolic reflection: Europe's greatest humanitarian tragedy since the Second World War. In his short life, Aylan Kurdi only got to know war and flight.
