Fichtelbergbahn at Hammerunterwiesenthal - No.2
A very long name for a tiny village in eastern Germany's Erzgebirge region.
Hammerunterwiesenthal, close by the border with the Czech Republic, is a stop along the Fichtelbergbahn,
which operates regularly scheduled steam-powered trains along its 750mm narrow gauge mainline from Cranzahl
(junction with the international rail system) to the ski resort of Oberwiesenthal, high in the Ore Mountains.
The photo was taken on a bright sunny winter afternoon in February 2008. It makes its first appearance here
(during an unremitting siege of soggy, gray, humid, and rain-heavy weather on the U.S. east coast).
Sunshine, low humidity...and a chuffing, photogenic steam train. Ahhhh, therapeutic!
