From the hortensia to the banana belt, Vila Franca do Campo
The Vila Franca banana belt still accounts for 90% of the Azores banana production, although its arable land shrinked more in the last 35 years (construction, roads) than in the previous 350 years.
The church of Nossa Senhora da Paz thrones 100 meters above its highest plantations.
The Nossa Senhora da Paz belvedere is the perfect standpoint to realize that nowhere else in the world do 100 meters elevation make such a difference in climate.
At 220 meters elevation hortensias already grow three times hgher than at sea level, yet still half the size of the world's highest hortensias, found at these very same south facing slopes 180 m higher.
