Godafoss

Der Goðafoss ist einer der bekanntesten Wasserfälle Islands. Er liegt auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Þingeyjarsveit im Norden des Landes nahe dem Anfang der Sprengisandur-Hochlandpiste in Sichtweite der Ringstraße. Das Wasser des Skjálfandafljót stürzt über eine Breite von ca. 30 m etwa 12 m in die Tiefe.
Der Sage nach soll der Gode Þorgeir um das Jahr 1000 n. Chr. nach der beschlossenen Übernahme des Christentums als Staatsreligion die letzten heidnischen Götterbilder in den Goðafoss geworfen haben. Daher der Name (= Götterwasserfall). Ein Kirchenfensterbild in der Kirche von Akureyri (Akureyrarkirkja) erinnert an diese Geschichte.
The Goðafoss is one of the most well-known wasserfaelle of Iceland. It is on the area of the municipality Þingeyjarsveit in the north of the country near the at the beginning of the Sprengisandur Hochlandpiste in range of vision of the struggle race. The water of the Skjálfandafljót falls over width of approx.. 30 m about 12 m into the depth. After the legend the Gode is to have thrown Þorgeir around the year 1000 A.D. after the decided assumption of the Christianity as state religion the last heidnischen God pictures in the Goðafoss. Therefore the name (= case of God water). A church window picture in the church of Akureyri (Akureyrarkirkja) reminds of this history.
