Gölyazı Apolyont, the fishing village from which the lake took its name, is now known as Gölyazi. Shaded by ancient plane trees it is attractively situated about 5km/3mi off the main road on the northeast shore, on a peninsula linked to the mainland by a causeway. In antiquity the lake was called Lacus Appolonia after Appolonia, a town famous for its temple cult and ruins (including remains of a theater, stadium and temple of Apollo from the fifth century B.C.) which today lie partly buried beneath the village.
