Hong Kong officially The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region [pronunciation], is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Macau. The territory lies on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east, west and south. Beginning as a trading port in the 19th century, Hong Kong has developed into one of the world's leading financial centres.

Hong Kong was a dependent territory of the United Kingdom from 1842 until the transfer of its sovereignty to the People's Republic of China in 1997. The Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Hong Kong stipulate that Hong Kong operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2047, fifty years after the transfer. Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the Central People's Government is responsible for the territory's defence and foreign affairs, while Hong Kong maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, immigration policy, and delegates to international organisations and events.

Hongkong (chin. „Duftender Hafen“; kantonesisch: Heunggong) ist der Name einer Sonderverwaltungszone an der Südküste der Volksrepublik China. Finanz-, Geschäfts- und Kulturzentrum ist Central, im Norden der Insel Hongkong gelegen. Größte Stadt des Gebietes ist die sich im Süden der New Territories befindende Stadt Kowloon. Das an der Mündung des Perlflusses auf einer Halbinsel und 262 Inseln gelegene Territorium war bis 30. Juni 1997 eine britische Kronkolonie und wurde vertragsgemäß am 1. Juli 1997 an China zurückgegeben.

Im Rahmen der von Deng Xiaoping entwickelten Doktrin Ein Land, zwei Systeme bleibt das „demokratisch“ marktwirtschaftliche System Hongkongs mindestens 50 Jahre neben dem kommunistischen System der Volksrepublik China bestehen, so dass Hongkongs Rolle als eines der Finanzzentren Asiens gesichert bleibt. Diese Autonomie erlaubt es Hongkong zwar, seine eigenen Gesetze, Zölle sowie seine eigene Währung zu haben, dennoch mischt sich die Regierung in Peking häufig in die Innenpolitik ein. So wird der Chief Executive durch ein von der Volksrepublik China bestimmtes Wahlkomitee gewählt.

Der Name Hongkong leitet sich von der kantonesischen Aussprache Heunggong (etwa Höng Gong zu sprechen) ab. Die offizielle Bezeichnung lautet Sonderverwaltungszone Hongkong der Volksrepublik China.
