In Flanders fields (2)
The First World War (also known as 'the Great War') was the first international war on a global scale.
Millions of soldiers and civilians died in this terrible conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918.
In Belgium, extremely heavy battles took place in Flanders fields, situated at the western front of the war.
Throughout the period 2014-2018 many commemorative ceremonies will take place over here in memory of those who fought and died for regaining freedom of our land.
I made a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery and was very impressed.
***************************************************
With 11.956 white gravestones, Tyne Cot Cemetery is the largest British war cemetery in the world. 70% of the buried soldiers are unknown.
Tyne Cot Cemetery is located in Passendale (Belgium) on the battlefields where in 1917 one of the bloodiest battles of WWI took place.
On the giant wall at the back of the cemetery are the names engraved of 34.927 soldiers who have no known grave (a continuation of the 54.896 names inscribed on the world famous Menin Gate at Ypres,Belgium which was too small to contain all the names as originally planned)

a powerful image with light and shadow patterns on these many rows of soldiers' gravestones ... the background showing the centaph and the wall with all those names under a blue sky ... it gives hope that there will not be another such war !!!greetings, Adele

"…one generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. the sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose…" (ecclesiastes)great use of light on this silently powerful statement against war! will we ever learn? i don't think so… does the sun care? laconically, he also rises… greetings, sabine.
