Khanabad River | main artery |
The terrain of Afghanistan mostly constists of rugged mountains and some deserted plains. There are only 5 percent arable land, mostly irrigated.
This is much too less to provide all the people with enough food.
Especially along the narrow river banks the farmers established a simple, but sophisticated irrigation system to cultivate the fertile soil, hoping, that no drought will peril the crop.
The picture was made through bullet-proof glass, so the colors are a little ... different.

I love that plain of peace near Kandahars. sabine krause 15/04/2012 11:25
a barren but beautiful land and a peaceful scenery, one is tempted to say at first sight – the smoothed, washed-out shapes of the sandy mountains are very beautiful, and vaguely (very vaguely! ; )) reminiscent of the creases in human skin, and the green near the river looks so fertile! – and yet, reading your little caption, the detail of the "bullet-proof glass", gives me the chills: not so peaceful after all, to say the least! it's a shame… greetings, sabine.Axel Flasbarth 14/04/2012 20:58
Amazing landscape and impressive contrast between the harsh mountains and the almost lush green in the foreground, well done, and good to know you were well protected :-)Adele D. Oliver 14/04/2012 20:45
A fascinating land- and mountainscape .... such contrasts from the barren mountains to the fertile green landscape in the foreground - an image giving a great idea of a "different" life.wish you a fine weekend,
