lightship [Elbe 1]
I took this picture yesterday, in a short moment of great light between two rain showers. Lucky day..:-)
So called lightships were located along the estuary of the Elbe River until 1988. They were nautical aids to lead vessels safely into the Hamburg harbour or out into the North Sea. Some lightships got lost due to heavy storms and took their crew with them.
Today Elbe 1 is used as a museum and rests in the safe harbour of Cuxhaven, Lower saxony.
