Old stone bridges

Greece
Region of Epirus
Zagorochoria
Bridge of Kokoros

Zagorochoria is a community of small villages scattered among the high and remote slopes of the Epirus mountains which are the highest in Greece.Due to their remote location they enjoyed a significant degree of independance and autonomy during the Ottoman occupation and ,nowadays, is a wonderful site for holidays throughout the year. They are loaded with tradition and history, especially famous for their masters of stone builders and masonry passing the craft from father to son for many ages.Even in our days architects come to study and admire the totally handmade stone construction of houses, roads and, especially, bridges that still stay on their arches defying weather and earthquakes.More than hundred bridges exist in this area the majority of them reached with difficulty after strenuous walks through paths and cliffs.

In the photo the bridge of Kokoros(the man who financed the bridge}, built in 1770.
