Once Proud and Shiny...
A Western Maryland Railway Alco RS-3 road switcher at the Baltimore & Ohio Transportation Museum in Baltimore.
The old gal looked rather forlorn and scabby on this visit to the museum a couple of years ago. Unlike several
of her sheltered colleagues, there was no room for her in the roundhouse, so the elements have taken their toll.
Ah, but many a childhood memory of RS-3s like this one, proud and shiny black with classy gold lettering,
as they rumbled past my parents' furniture business along East Monument Street by Fallsway in Baltimore -
even a cab ride arranged by my Dad who had befriended one of the WM's engineers.
What a nice after-school surprise for a train loving kiddo...
I still remember the growl of the prime mover and the typical Alco "imitation steam
locomotive" black cloud erupting from the stack as their engineers notched them up.
Presented on Father's Day 2018 in honor of my Dad.(*)
