If you are driving U.S. Route 97, you need to watch out for ghost town Shaniko. At the intersection to Oregon Route 218 just turn right at the "General Store". Even though around 36 people still live there, Shaniko is classified as ghost town.
"Cross Hollows" was an old stage stop, operated by German August Scherneckau from 1874 to 1887. He was well liked by Indians, but they could not pronounce his name right, so it was transformed to the much easier "Shaniko".
I am just browsing my last years´ travel folders. In April we are back to Florida and Texas.
