Boldt Castle was built at the turn of the century by George C. Boldt for his wife, Louise, as a testimony of his love for Louise. Tragically, Louise died shortly before the Castle was finished. In his grief George Boldt abandoned the project and forbid his family from ever returning to the island.

“Portal” was shot in the abandoned Boldt Castle Playhouse on the Saint Lawrence River. The bright view of Alexandria Bay beyond the glass door pulled me towards the door. The image speaks to me of the longings, separations, and transitions we experience in life.
