Roman Snail

The roman snail is a relatively large air-breathing land snail that can be found in the shrubbery of open forests.
It’s also a rare visitor to gardens that are however usually more frequented by garden snails or slugs.

The head of the snail has two pairs of tentacles : the upper and larger pair contains the eyes and the lower pair is used to feel the ground in front and provides for the snail’s sense of smell.

This animal is a herbivore that lives of various leaves, fruits, vegetables and flowers as you can see in my picture.
Did you know that a roman snail has more then 20.000 (!) extremely minuscule cornified teeth ? (only visible with an electron microscope)

Dutch name : Wijngaardslak
German name : Weinbergschnecke
Latin name : Helix pomatia
