She Lifts Her Lamp Beside the Golden Door

It wasn’t until I made this helicopter circuit of New York’s harbor last June
that I realized how close these two iconic islands actually are to one other.

One can imagine the emotions of past generations of immigrants, hoping for
a new future in America, standing on decks of crowded ships, greeted by
Lady Liberty with her upheld, welcoming torch, on their way to the immigration
center, just beyond the Statue on Ellis Island.
