Etwa 50 Km südlich von Baotou befinden sich die letzten Ausläufer der Mu Us-Wüste. Genau an diesen Ausläufern führt die Strecke Baotou - Shenmu, deren bekannteste Stelle die 'Singing Sands' riesigen Sanddünnen waren. Ab etwa 2000 wurde diese Stelle ein sehr bekanntes und besuchtes Touristenort mit Sessellift und Hotels !
1996 war davon noch nichts zu sehen - nur die verückten Eisenbahnfotografen besuchten diese abgelege Stelle, denn der Bahbetrieb wurde damals noch zu 100% mit Dampflokomotiven abgewickelt... Hier fährt eine QJ mit dem täglichen Personenzug Baotou - Shenmu an den Sanddünnen, die leider zum Teil hinter der Dampffahne verschwinden.

The famous 'Singing Sands' location is a huge sand dune (90m high), part of the Mu Us desert in Inner Mongolia, South of Baotou in China. From 2000 onwards, the site was turned into a touristic complex with many attractions and hotels... Until then, only a few railway photographs were crazy enough to travel to this remote location - the main reason for that was the 100% steam-haulage of the trains on the Baotou - Shenmu railway line !
This is the daily passenger train to Shenmu in front of the 'Singing Sands' dunes.
