Stately Home, Stylish Scooter - An Embassy Row Impression

The late afternoon sunlight delineates architectural details in this springtime view of the Joseph Beale House in Washington, D.C. The building's convex facade looks out along Massachusetts Avenue at Sheridan Circle.

This stately residence in the 18th Century Romanesque Revival style, along Washington's Embassy Row was built between 1907 and -09 for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Beale, by Washington architect Glenn Brown. It is one of several buildings designed by Brown along Massachusetts Avenue. In 1926, the building was sold to the Government of Egypt. Since then, it has served as the official residence of the Egyptian ambassador to the United States.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in1973.
