Sunset on the Canal - A Georgetown Impression
Late afternoon serenity on an early autumn day...
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, once a major artery for the transport of goods between Washington and
points west, runs parallel to the Potomac River and is a most attractive feature of the Georgetown landscape.
After a long project to restore the canal and its locks, the newly built Georgetown Heritage Canal Boat (*) now
makes trips up and down the first mile of this scenic waterway, the experience enhanced by fascinating live
narration dealing with the Canal's history as well as what life was like on the Canal in those mule-powered days.
Here, a view up the canal from Lock 4, as a September sunset
paints the calm waters upstream in tones of burnished gold.
