~~~ Snowy Owl - Schnee-Eule (Nyctea Scandiaca) ~~~

Size m/f: 55-66 cm,
wingspan m/f: 145-160 cm
weight m/f: 1700 - 2100 g
Plumage pattern:
Male: snow-white with few spots on the wings
Females: females and young males have dark spots and bands on wings and belly

Eyes: yellow
Legs: are feathered up to the claws
Food:
mainly lemmings and other small mammals up to snow hare size, also birds up to duck size

Habitat:
Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland, Russia and Canada
Biotope: arctic tundra
Natural enemies: Arctic fox

Mostly a monogamous bird; very shy

The snowy owl is diurnal and crepuscular, hunts at night in winter.
It is the only owl species that has the ability to store up to 800g of fat in its body in summer.
This allows it to survive arctic winters without any problems.

Life expectancy:
In the wild up to 9 years, in captivity the maximum age is 28 years.

Endangerment:
Due to climatic changes, the population will steadily decline in Scandinavia in the long term.

Natürliche Feinde: Polarfuchs
Meist ein monogamer Vogel; sehr scheu

Die Schneeeule ist tag- und dämmerungsaktiv, jagt im Winter auch bei Nacht.
Als einzige Eulen-Art besitzt sie die Fähigkeit im Sommer bis zu 800g Fett im Körper zu speichern.
Damit übersteht sie problemlos arktische Winter.

Lebenserwartung:
in freier Natur bis 9 Jahre, in Gefangenschaft liegt das Höchstalter bei 28 Jahren

Gefährdung:
aufgrund klimatischer Veränderungen wird der Bestand langfristig in Skandinavien stetig abnehmen.
