The ghost village

Aegean Sea Island of Chios
Chios is a big, rich and very historic island in North Agean Sea. The most famous site of Chios is Anavatos, a medieval habitat with a first historic evidence in the 14th century. The town was built on the top of a 500m height conical rock and it was well fortified around to avoid hostile attacks.During the years of the Ottoman occupation enjoyed a good degree of autonomy and protection-as in fact the entire island because of its famous products- but taking energetic part in the declaration of Independence War (1821-1828) the island was attacked by the Ottomans and was completely destroyed. Anavatos became the site of fierce battles and eventually massacre. Since then the place remains ruined, deserted and, because of the bad memories, is called by the inhabitants "The ghost village".
