The Living Forest (124) : Norway Spruce

The Norway Spruce is a large and majestic evergreen coniferous tree.
The beautiful cones contain seeds after fertilization which are a basic food for squirrels and birds like woodpeckers and crossbills.

Dutch name : Fijnspar
German name : Gemeine Fichte
Latin name : Picea abies

PS: Did you know that the oldest Norway Spruce tree in the world is the “Old Tjikko”, located in Sweden and 9550 (!) years old.
(determination in 2008).

Wunderschön sieht das aus!!! Herrlich, die Zapfen leuchten in einem ganz feinen Licht! Man sagt immer, wenn es viele Zapfen gäbe, dann käme ein harter Winter... :-((

I like spruce.In our garden-yard in old town grow high old spruce more than 150 years old...Beautiful shot!

Im schönem Licht präsentiert diese Fichte ihre Zapfen. Sehr interessant, dass die Fichte so alt werden kann, hätte ich nie gedacht!

never knew that spruce trees could grow so old and last that long! they always look rather fragile to me – a lot more fragile e.g. than the mighty pine! but what a fertile year for this specimen here! so many cones – the squirrels and other creatures of the forest will be well provided for! lg, sabine.
