The Living Forest (205) : European Hornet (2)
Here’s a second shot of the European Hornet, this time showing a frontal capture of its scary head in detail.
The European Hornet is an impressive insect and also the largest wasp in Europe.
This wasp is rarely aggressive, in contrast to the much smaller common wasp.
The European Hornet is not attracted to human foods and wastes, but it eats insects.
Many people do not realise that Hornets control lots of species of insect pests, so its presence in a garden or agricultural farm should be welcomed as a benefit.
Because of its rather fearsome appearance, its size and loud sound this species has a bad public image, yet it is generally a peaceful, non-aggressive wasp.
More needs to be done to educate the public about this fascinating insect.
Dutch name : Hoornaar
German name : Hornisse
Latin name : Vespa crabro
