The Living Forest (247) : Roman Snail

The Roman snail is a relatively large air-breathing land snail that can be found in the shrubbery of open forests. His appearance is a perfect camouflage on the forest floor (see picture)
It’s also a rare visitor to gardens that are however usually more frequented by garden snails or slugs.

The head of the snail has two pairs of tentacles : the upper and larger pair contains the eyes and the lower pair is used to feel the ground in front and provides for the snail’s sense of smell.

The Roman snail is hermaphroditic, meaning that both male and female sexual organs are present in the same individual.
Mating takes several hours, sometimes even a day……. :-))

Dutch name : Wijngaardslak
German name : Weinbergschnecke
Latin name : Helix pomatia

With this shot I say bye bye for some time as I’m leaving on holiday next sunday.
Hope to see you all back safe and sound somewhere in august.
