The Living Forest (262) : Cross Spider

The Cross Spider (also known as Garden Spider) is very common in forests, heathlands, hedgerows and gardens.
It can easily be identified by the distinctive cross on the abdomen.

This spider builds circular orb webs and can usually be found sitting at the center of the web, head down, waiting for a prey to get entangled in the web.
The victim is then quickly captured and always wrapped in silk before being eaten.

The specimen in the picture was very busy weaving a new cobweb.

The female of this species is much larger than a male and thus, the much smaller male must approach a female very cautiously if he wants to mate.
Did you know that if he's not careful, he can end up being eaten by her !
Speaking of girl power…….

Dutch name : Kruisspin
German name : Gartenkreuzspinne
Latin name : Araneus diadematus

    Hallo Mark,

    LG

He/she looks very mean. Maybe spiders are mean, I have never hear a kind word spoken about them :-))
The laws of nature are so different.... fortunately the option of being eaten if you lose the mating quest is not really practiced by humans :-))
    Great picture and story Mark

fascinating this world of spiders ... their amazingly symmetrical webs, their beauty, their habits :-)))) - and their habit of spinning their threads across our stairs and pergola and all areas that give us access to garden and road - I keep ending up with them in my hair or neck or, or :-))) your image of course excellent with such fine compo showing both net and spider, and especially with the fine details of her markings on body and liegs !!!
    greetings, Adele
