...shop, post office and traffic.

Turning back to the square from the Torphichen Inn, one finds the small Post Office in unit with Davidson's Village Store; also called "The Wee Shop". I found information on the Internet that it had now been closed; which - if true - would be another great loss for the people of Torphichen. This is, or was, the first place to go in the morning to get your freshly printed newspaper and those little things you forgot while shopping in Bathgate. The Post Office also handles various banking transactions, so there is no need to travel to Bathgate or Linlithgow. In the age of the Internet, the latest news, TV programs and account balances can of course also be accessed online, but not all older people can do this.
To calm traffic in the village, the inbound lane has been artificially blocked for a short distance, requiring drivers to slow down and watch out for oncoming traffic. Anyone who is still too fast on the square will be informed of the maximum speed of 20 miles per hour by signs on both sides and an additional marking on the ground; after all, behind the bend on the right-hand side is the Torphichen primary school. On the left edge of the picture you can still see the house "8 The Square", which offers more inside than you would expect from the outside. On the right edge of the picture you can just see the village fountain "Jubilee Well".

Wenn man sich vom Torphichen Inn wieder dem Square zuwendet, trifft man auf das kleine Post Office in Einheit mit dem Davidson's Village Store; auch "The Wee Shop" genannt. Im Internet fand ich eine Information, dass er mittlerweile geschlossen worden sei; was - falls wahr - ein weiterer herber Verlust für die Einwohner Torphichens wäre. Hier ist oder war die erste morgentliche Anlaufstelle um sich seine druckfrische Zeitung und beim Einkauf in Bathgate vergessene Kleinigkeiten zu besorgen. Das Post Office wickelt auch diverse Bankgeschäfte ab, so dass man nicht extra nach Bathgate oder Linlithgow fahren muss. Im Zeitalter des Internets lassen sich die neusten Nachrichten, das TV-Programm und Kontostände natürlich auch online abrufen, was aber nicht alle älteren Menschen beherrschen.
Um den Straßenverkehr im Dorf zu beruhigen, wurde die einwärts führende Spur für ein kurzes Stück künstlich blockiert, sodass die Fahrer abbremsen und auf den Gegenverkehr achten müssen. Wer am Square immer noch zu schnell ist, wird durch beidseitige Hinweisschilder und eine zusätzliche Markierung auf dem Boden auf die Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 20 Meilen pro Stunde hingewiesen; denn schließlich befindet sich hinter der Kurve rechtsseitig die Grundschule von Torphichen. Am linken Bildrand erkennt man noch das Haus "8 The Square", welches innen mehr bietet als man von außen ahnen würde. Am rechten Bildrand sieht man gerade noch den Dorfbrunnen "Jubilee Well".

Some infos about the village and its history:
"Torphichen is a parish and village; the former, in the small debt court district of Linlithgow, is bounded north and east by the parish of Linlithgow, south-east by Bathgate, and west and south by the county of Stirling: the village lies 2 miles west from Westfield station on the Blackstone and Bathgate branch of the North British railway and on the road to Linlithgow, from which town it is 4 miles distant. Adjacent to the village, on the north-east, are some remains of the hospital or preceptory of Torphichen, the principal house in Scotland appertaining to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. This place gives the title of baron to the Sandilands family; Sir James Sandilands, the first peer (1564) was prior or preceptor here of the Knights of St. John. The parish church occupies the site of the nave of the preceptory church, and the ruins of the transept and a portion of the choir also remains. There is also a United Free church. The Memorial Hall, erected in 1897 by Mrs. Fitzgerald, in memory of her husband, Cpt. Gerald Fitzgerald, at a cost of about £1,400, contains reading and coffee rooms. The parish, although in some parts moorland, is generally fertile: coal and ironstone are found within it, and there is a paper mill."

„Torphichen ist eine Gemeinde und ein Dorf; ersteres liegt im kleinen Schuldengerichtsbezirk Linlithgow und wird im Norden und Osten von der Gemeinde Linlithgow, im Südosten von Bathgate und im Westen und Süden von der Grafschaft Stirling begrenzt: Das Dorf liegt 2 Meilen westlich vom Bahnhof Westfield an der Blackstone- und Bathgate-Abzweigung der North British Railway und an der Straße nach Linlithgow, von der es 4 Meilen entfernt ist. Angrenzend an das Dorf im Nordosten befinden sich einige Überreste des Krankenhauses oder Präzeptorium von Torphichen, dem Haupthaus in Schottland, das den Rittern des Heiligen Johannes von Jerusalem gehört. Dieser Ort verleiht der Familie Sandilands den Titel eines Barons; Sir James Sandilands, der erste Peer (1564), war hier Prior oder Präzeptor der Knights of St. John. Die Pfarrkirche befindet sich an der Stelle des Kirchenschiffs der Präzeptionskirche, und die Ruinen des Querschiffs und ein Teil des Chors sind ebenfalls erhalten.
