Alfama

Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, actually its medieval historical soul, a delightful maze of narrow cobblestone streets, tiny squares, old churches, picturesque restaurants, fado bars and old houses with title panels and wrought iron balconies where merge flowerpots, caged birds and drying loundry...Amalia Rodriguez, Portugal's greatest fado singer was interred here(1999). The best way to visit Alfama is, of course, to walk and while ascending to the top come across with all these wonders mentioned above. However, another pleasurable way is to ride the famous "remodelado tram" 28 which passes through the streets and hills of Alfama. Due to the undulating route, only this classic remodelado tram that was originally comissioned in the 1930's, is able to navigate the steep inclines of the tracks and remains one of the emblems of Lisbon. Reaching to the top of the district and standing on Miraduro das Portas do Sol or de Santa Lucia one can admire a breathtaken view over Alfama's rooftops, domes and church towers.

On the photo a typical street and yard.
