Well-Fed and Wide-Tracked
I like photographing cats.
I also like photographing the feline muscular grace of certain Jaguar automobiles. (*)
Not all cats remind me of Jaguars (or even Mercury Cougars or Buick Wildcats).
And not all cat-named cars remind me of kitties.
But when I recently re-discovered this photo of Oakley, taken some years ago while strolling the
streets of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, I was reminded of another automotive marque entirely.
Car enthusiasts may remember a long-running advertising campaign for GM’s Pontiac Division muscle cars
was “the wide-track Pontiac” which pointed up the car’s wide stance and road hugging performance.
I’m not at all sure if portly Oakley was a speedy high-performance cat. You’d probably have to ask his humans
(as Oakley would now be in Kitty Heaven), or perhaps conduct a survey of Alexandria mousies as to whether
their great-great ancestors terrorized succeeding generations with cautionary tales about the “demon Oakley.”
But I ask you: Is that a wide-track cat or what?
