Swakopmund

Swakopmund is a city on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Namibia, 280 km (175 miles) west of Windhoek, Namibia's capital. Swakopmund is a beach resort and an excellently preserved example of German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South-West Africa. It is one of the few places anywhere outside of Europe where a sizable minority of the population speaks German and has German roots.

Touristisch attraktiv ist das Städtchen nicht zuletzt wegen seiner vielen deutschtypischen Gebäude, die in der wilhelminischen Zeit entstanden sind.
Nahe Swakopmund liegen die Walvis Bay (Namibias einziger Tiefseehafen), Sandwich Harbour mit sienen Flamingos und das Cape Cross mit seiner riesigen Robbenkolonie. Außerdem ist Swakopmund Ausgangspunkt für zahlreiche Rundflüge entlang der Wüstenküste Namibias, so z. B. Skeleton Coast mit ihren vielen Schifwracks und Forbidden Coast, an der die berühmte Lange Wand - eine imposante Düne - liegt.
