Boats at Buttermere
This was taken about 19 years ago, at Buttermere, in the Lake District, my favorite place to visit. Buttermere is one of the lakes in Cumberland, although it is said that in the Lake District, there is only one 'lake', Bassenthwaite Lake. All the rest are 'meres' and 'waters'. One of the more dreadful things done by faceless beurocrats, was the welding together of two separate and different traditions, Cumberland and Westmoreland into 'Cumbria'. I have a connection with the place, as my mother comes from Workington, and we visited the Lake District many times when I was young, and I grew to love the place. Please God grant me a lottery win so I can live there ! I will visit there more if I am spared. The rugged mountain in the background is 'Haystacks', one of the favorite places of A.W. Wainwright, author of the hand written guide books to the Lake District. The whole scene speaks to me of a moment of peace in a troubled life perhaps.
This, along with reaching the top of Helvellyn and Snowdon, is near the top of my 'Things to do before you die list !' One day, I will ascend the path in the distance, and gaze upon 'Inominate Tarn', final resting place of the spirit of Wainwright, and for a time, I will be at peace with the world. (For a little while.)
