Pirin Mountain
"The Pirin Mountains are a mountain range in southwest Bulgaria, with Vihren (2,914 m high) the highest peak. The range extends about 40 km northwest-southeast, and about 25 km wide. Most of the mountain is under protection within the Pirin National Park - an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a site of the European Ecological Network NATURA2000.
Pirin is noted for its rich flora and fauna. Much of the area is forested, with one of the best conifer woods in Bulgaria, holding important populations of the Balkan endemic species Macedonian Pine, Bosnian Pine and Bulgarian Fir. Animals include the Balkan Shamois, Wolf and the Brown Bear. Increadibly rich bird fauna with typical representatives of the high mountain species (Wallcreeper, Alpine Accentor, Nutcracker, Golden Eagle, etc.), forest birds (Capercailie, Hen Grouse, White-backed Woodpecker, etc.) and even Mediterrannean species as Sardinian Warbler, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Nuthatch and others."
