River Goyt at New Mills
New Mills is another of our favorite villages we like to visit now and then. Underneath the town is a spectacular gorge, where the rivers Sett and Goyt meet. The gorge is called 'The Torrs' and has vertical rocky cliffs where climbers often try out their skills. Just below the meeting place of the rivers is an old weir. At this place there has been built a hydro-electric station which generates power for the town. This shot was taken before the scheme began. I like the way the scene is framed and your eye is drawn through it from under the archway and down the weir. Further down the river, a walkway was built over the river in 2000, called 'The Millennium Walkway. I will include a shot of it later. The ruins arond the site give the place an 'Arcadian' feel, beloved of the old romantic artists.
