Thanks Adele. I'm glad you like it. The male is more "flashy", but as you suggest, the female is also an eye-catcher. We enjoy seeing them come back in great numbers every winter. I wish I could say the same about goldeneyes. I only spotted one this year, and a very skittish one at that.
If you happen to come across a goldeneye at close quarters, you will see it is fairly different from the tufted duck. the head is shaped differently, the bill colour and shape differ too, and if you get a close look at the feathers, the general pattern and colour in the female do not match. Admittedly, the angle of the shot does not feature the typical tuft on the head particularly well.
A beautifull little duck - company for my Wigeon .... I think your species is called Goldeneye or Barrow's Goldeneye ... have seen them here - very good and sharp your capture !!!
